Guide to the Perfect Camping Coffee

Domaine International de Rouville

For many campers, the day doesn't really begin until you have a good cup of coffee. Whether you like to take your time at sunrise or are more of an early hiker, enjoying a hot cup of coffee in the great outdoors is magical. It's a simple, yet oh-so-satisfying ritual. Here's our guide to making the perfect cup of coffee... even away from the kitchen.

1. Choose your method

When camping, simplicity is king. Here are three popular options:

  • The French press: ideal for lovers of strong coffee. It requires only hot water, ground coffee, and a little patience.
  • Reusable filter coffee (foldable cone type): lightweight, compact, easy to clean and perfect for backpacking.
  • The camping percolator: a campfire classic. It brews rich, comforting coffee the old-fashioned way.

It's up to you to choose according to the space available, your taste... and your level of motivation in the morning!

2. Use good coffee

Taste always starts with quality. Choose freshly ground coffee before your departure, storing it in an airtight container. For long expeditions or minimalist treks, individual ground coffee bags or compostable pods are also practical and lightweight options.

3. Control the water temperature

Over-boiling water can burn the coffee's aromas. A good tip: wait 30 seconds after boiling before pouring. The ideal temperature is around 90 to 95°C for optimal extraction.

4. Let it infuse… then enjoy

Let it steep according to your chosen method (about 3-4 minutes for a French press). Then? Inhale deeply, listen to the sounds of nature, and take the time to savor. When camping, every little pleasure becomes precious. And nothing beats a good cup of coffee to start the day off right.

Happy adventures… and happy caffeinated mornings!
