Ready for camping? Here's how to start the season off right
The warmer weather is back, and with it, the irresistible urge to escape into nature. We can already imagine the rustling of leaves in the trees, the sound of frogs chirping at dusk, and the joy of waking up gently, wrapped up in our sleeping bags. But before pitching our tents and lighting our first fires, a little preparation is essential to fully enjoy every moment.
Prevention is better than panic.
The first outing of the year sometimes holds a few surprises: a mattress that no longer inflates, a tent that smells damp, or, worse, forgetting the bag of coffee. To avoid unforeseen events that can spoil the fun, take a moment to take inventory of your equipment at home, in a quiet place. This will allow you to leave with peace of mind, ready to savor the experience to the fullest.
No matter your style—car camping, tent camping, van camping, or minimalist backpacking—a little due diligence is in order.
The essentials to check before leaving
- First aid kit: Keep it stocked and easily accessible.
- Sun protection and mosquito repellent: Essential for enjoying the outdoors without discomfort.
- Sleeping pad: Test it to make sure it's still comfortable and waterproof.
- Tent and stakes: Check the seams, poles, and canvas. Re-waterproof if necessary.
- Stove and fuel: Test before you leave. Nothing is worse than a burner that doesn't work.
- Lighting: Test your headlamps, flashlights, and lanterns. Don't forget the batteries.
- Sleeping bag: Check the closures and the warmth it provides.
- Fire equipment: Axe, lighter, firelighter — everything must be ready.
- Camping Kitchen: Don't forget anything: mess tins, utensils, dish soap, garbage bags... and coffee!
- Hygiene: Biodegradable soap, toilet paper, wipes, toothbrush...
- Drinking water: Filter, tablets or good old bottle.
- Useful items: Bottle opener, multi-function knife, rope, pliers, folding chairs, etc.
A quick overview now, and you'll be ready to savor every sunrise, every hike, every campfire.
Good preparation… and good camping! Remember to reserve your pitch!
