Visit the Hydro-Québec Électrium with your family

Domaine International de Rouville

Are family outings harder to find during colder weather? What else can we do other than take the kids to the movies? Today, the Domaine International de Rouville team has a great idea for your whole family: visit the Électrium, the electricity interpretation center.

A free and interactive outing

Located in Saint-Julie, less than a 30-minute drive from Domaine International de Rouville, Électrium is a center that makes Hydro-Québec's electricity knowledge accessible to everyone. You will be able, in the company of competent and dynamic guides, to explore the impressive journey of an electron, from the hydroelectric power station to your home. It’s informative and fascinating!

All kinds of topics

By visiting the center, you will quickly learn that electricity was not invented: it is found in nature. Here are some of the many topics you can learn about:

  • Static electricity
  • Voltage and electrical circuits
  • Electric and magnetic fields
  • Renewable energies
  • Electricity production in Quebec

You will also have the opportunity to have unforgettable experiences that will allow you to live enriching moments with your family!

A rich history

It was in 1970 that Hydro‑Québec's Electricity Research Institute opened to create a research laboratory worthy of the name. Following several research and innovations, it was in the mid-1980s that Hydro-Québec adopted an action plan intended to inform the population about its essential work. It was then that the project to set up an interpretation center was born in order to popularize electricity to the population. The center is being built near Hydro‑Québec's Electricity Research Institute, in Sainte‑Julie.

In 1991, the Électrium opened its doors to the public and thousands of curious people went there in the first two years. The center's mission is to inform them about Hydro‑Québec so that they understand the phenomenon of electric and magnetic fields as well as different concepts about electricity. We also want to introduce young people to science, particularly through experimentation and interactivity.

Today, more than 650,000 people have passed through the doors of the center: families, couples, school visits... we come from everywhere, from as far away as China and New Zealand, to visit the Électrium and all are welcome!

Some practical information

Please note that entry to the Électrium is free, but reservations are required. The visit lasts between 90 and 120 minutes and begins at a fixed time.

From September to May, the center is open Monday to Friday from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Sunday from 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. From June to August, the center is open Monday to Sunday, from 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.

The center also welcomes school visits, so this could be a good option if you are a teacher.
